Dr. Chandra J. Foote has been appointed dean of the College of Education at Niagara University, effective June 1.

Foote has been serving as interim dean of the college since Dr. Debra A. Colley was promoted to executive vice president of the university last August.

"Dr. Foote embodies Niagara University's Vincentian approach to education through her integration of research into practice and her passion for engaging students in the most meaningful ways," said the Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University. "Her dedication to Niagara and the College of Education has helped foster continued growth and increased recognition of our programs nationwide. During the search process, Dr. Foote clearly demonstrated that she has the knowledge, skill and commitment necessary to continue this positive trend under her leadership."

Foote joined Niagara University in 1996 and possesses an exemplary record of teaching, scholarship and service. She has held several leadership positions during her tenure, including professor, chair of the teacher education (2004-10) and early childhood/childhood education (2010-12) departments, and associate dean (2012-15).

In addition, Foote has coordinated the university's edTPA and accreditation objectives, along with serving on academic senate and committees on teacher evaluation, strategic enrollment and orientation, among others.

Foote's research interests focus on inclusive special education. Her recent publications on the topic appear in the International Journal of Special Education and American National Biography. She's also studying how to improve teaching practice and assessment in higher education, having co-published a recent article in The Journal of Effective Teaching and Language Assessment Quarterly, and co-facilitated a U.S. Department of Education Investing in Innovation grant with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Foote is also a certified elementary teacher in New York state, with administrative experience in head start programming. She earned bachelor's (elementary education), master's (psychology) and doctoral (psychology) degrees from Syracuse University.

Within the community, Foote is active with Mount St. Mary's Child Care Center, Special Olympics New York and the Niagara Falls City School District.

Niagara University's College of Education offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. It holds National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education accreditation in the U.S.; Ministerial Consent through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in the Province of Ontario; and accreditation through the Ontario College of Teachers. Niagara University has had a strong presence in Ontario, Canada, for the past four decades, educating Canadian students both on its New York campus and at various sites in the greater Toronto region of Canada.
