Spring has arrived in Lewiston and, with it, the 21st annual Lewiston Family Spring Fling. The celebration of winter's end - a time to renew old friendships and make new ones - is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at the Red Brick Municipal Building, 145 N. Fourth St.

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department sponsors the rain-or-shine event.

The Spring Fling committee has kept fan favorites in place this year. The Spring Fling will open with a Lewiston Kiwanis and Lewiston Service Guild 1-mile run for youth ages 14 and under. Registration will start at 11:30 a.m. at the Onondaga end of the Red Brick. The race will start at 12:30 p.m. and is all on flat ground.

Race shirts, courtesy of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club and Lewiston Service Guild, will be given to the first 100 youth registering. Each participant must fill out an application form. A parent's or guardian's signature is necessary. Parents and guardians can run the course with the younger runners.

Awards will be given out in age categories. There is no fee for the race.

Starting at 1 p.m., there will be a street art contest for all school ages. The theme for this year is "Animals." Chalk will be provided and competition will be judged at approximately 3 p.m.

A basket auction will run from 1-3:30 p.m. with a wide selection of prizes - from tickets to the Whirlpool Jet Boat, Artpark, Maid of the Mist, Old Fort Niagara, Bisons and Castellani Art Museum, to a variety of prizes for children and adults.

Other activities at the event include a petting zoo, Putt-Putt golf, balloon sculptures as well as Bounce-n-Around bounce house.

At the Spring Fling, there is the community atmosphere. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided at no charge. Each family is asked to bring a dessert to pass.

The event is open to residents and nonresidents. There is no charge for the events.
