Obit: Hon. John F. 'Jake' Halpin

Retired Niagara County Family Court Judge Hon. John F. "Jake" Halpin, of Lewiston entered into rest Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport. He was born in Philadelphia on Dec. 9, 1930, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Ryan) Halpin.

Halpin attended Roman Catholic High School and spent his summers working as a lifeguard on the beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey. He distinguished himself on the RCHS football and crew teams having competed in the Schoolboy Rowing Association American Championships. He received the Most Valuable Player award on the championship-winning football team and was awarded a football scholarship to Niagara University, where he graduated in 1955.

Halpin served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War prior to enrolling in law school at the University at Buffalo, where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1959. He served as the assistant district attorney in Niagara County and went into private practice before being elected Niagara County Family Court judge in 1971. Halpin was the second family court judge to be appointed in Niagara County, serving for 26 years, until his retirement in 1997.

He was a member of Lewiston Kiwanis Club and the Loyal Order of Moose. Halpin enjoyed sailing and playing golf with his family and many cherished friends.

Jake was the loving father of Connie Casillas, Katherine (Steven) Bennett, Megan (Chris) Bartolomei, Jacqueline (Michael) Rapp and Mary (Peter) Dapkus; he was the brother in law of Jay Nicholas and Peggy Halpin; and he is survived by nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late John A. and Monica Halpin, grandfather of the late Nicholas Casillas, and brother of the late Connie Nicholas and Richard Halpin.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's R.C. Church, 620 Center St., Lewiston, with Msgr. David G. LiPuma officiating.
