Incumbents win primary challenges

Unofficial results for the Sept. 10 primary elections are as follows:

• In the Town of Wheatfield, incumbent Supervisor Robert Cliffe defeated challenger Thomas Larson, 329 to 239 to earn the nomination for the GOP line. Cliffe previously defeated Larson in a 2013 primary and the general vote.

"I am gratified that the Republican Party here in Wheatfield remains committed to my same goals: Keep taxes down, improve drainage and make any growth good for all of the residents of Wheatfield," Cliffe said. "It feels good to know that I can proudly stand on my record.

"The primary is over, now on to the November election with renewed vigor."

On the Town Board, incumbent Republicans Larry Helwig and Gilbert Doucet earned 388 votes and 349 votes respectively to defeat David T. Lee (256 votes) for the GOP line.

On the Democratic primary, Shirley Joy earned 236 votes, followed by Robert Flammia with 185 votes and Thomas J. Stevenson with 130 votes. Helwig and Doucet will face Joy and Flammia for the two board seats in November.

•In the Town of Niagara, which will have two open seats up for grabs in November, Samuel S. Gatto (311 votes) and Robert J. McDermott Jr. (217) topped Richard A. Sirianni (207 votes) for the Democratic nomination. Sirianni already has the Republican nomination.

•In North Tonawanda, Donna Braun, incumbent alderman for the 2nd Ward, dealt a sizable defeat to challenger Lori Calamita for the GOP line, 144 votes to 13 votes.

Calamita, a Republican, already has the Democratic line.
