Niagara University has received a $150,000 grant from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation to assist in funding construction of a nursing simulation center on its campus.

The grant from the Buffalo-based foundation will be used to support spatial upgrades and capital equipment purchases within the comprehensive clinical lab, which will be housed in Dunleavy Hall upon completion.

Construction of the nursing simulation center began in February. It is expected to be completed this spring.

"We are very thankful to the Wendt Foundation for their generous grant. It is an important step in the university's goal of constructing a state-of-the-art lab that facilitates comprehensive health care education for the nurses of tomorrow," said Dr. Frances Crosby, chair of the nursing department at Niagara University.

NU's nursing simulation center will provide "hands-on" opportunities for students to manage patient encounters and skills in a risk-free, virtual reality environment, while supporting traditional classroom learning and clinical practice experiences. The center will offer opportunities for inter-professional experiential learning. Students will gain a greater understanding of patient assessment and care and become adept at responding to complex situations in a timely manner with competency and confidence.

In addition, a board/conference room with closed-circuit capabilities will foster leadership development and team-building competencies.

The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation is a private, philanthropic organization that focuses on education, the arts and social services in Buffalo and Western New York. In 2008, the foundation awarded $300,000 to help fund construction of the B. Thomas Golisano Center for Integrated Sciences, which opened at NU for the fall semester of 2013.
