Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, home to the New York Air National Guard's 107th Airlift Wing and the Air Force Reserve's 914th Airlift Wing, will host a day camp for area military kids from Aug. 4-8.

The day camp is being run by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County.

The "Around the World Day Camp" will offer military youth the chance to experience and discover other cultures through the use of science, technology, engineering and math (known as STEM) hands-on experiential learning activities. Each day, youth will develop and strengthen resiliency and life skills to use in their everyday lives.

A different country, or region, will be explored each day. Learning will center on activities including: geography, weather/climate, time, travel/how would you get there, currency, astronomy, music, food, customs, housing/shelters, education, imports/exports and clothing. Additionally, several presenters will be scheduled to further orientate youth to cultures.

Embedded into the learning activities are a plethora of tools related to 4-H STEM curriculums. Examples of 4-H STEM curriculums that will be applied in the day camp are: computer, geospatial, sewing, "Exploring Your Environment," "Reading Makes Cents" and Latino cultural arts. Sections of the NASA After-School Universe curriculum will be utilized for the astronomy activities.

Alongside the curriculums, the day camp will make use of the New York State: Operation Military Kids Mobile Technology Lab equipment - computers, printers, cameras, GPS units and iPads.

Participation in the camp costs $25. Interested military families who have not yet signed up can call Erin Fulton at 315-788-8450 to register.
