It's been a heck of a spring semester for Ian Burt.

The Niagara University accounting instructor learned in March that a dissertation he authored earned the 2014 Michael J. Barrett Doctoral Dissertation Award from The Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation. That distinction comes with an award of $10,000.

This month, Burt found out he is also the 2014 recipient of the Keith Boocock Doctoral Scholarship. Presented by the Canadian Public Accountability Board in memory of its former CEO, the $10,000 scholarship is granted to a Ph.D. student who is working on his/her dissertation at a Canadian university.

Both awards were granted in recognition of a dissertation authored by Burt, which is titled "The Effect of the Internal Auditor's Dual Identities on the Ability to Identify and Assess Internal Control Weaknesses."

Burt, who is currently pursuing a doctorate in accounting at the University of Waterloo, will receive the CPB award during the Canadian Academic Accounting Association's annual conference on May 31 in Edmonton.

The scholarship is based on a review of dissertation proposals that have been approved by the student's Ph.D. committee and officially accepted by the university. The prime criterion for selection is the likelihood the student's dissertation will lead to improvement in the quality of auditing of public companies.

"On behalf of CPB, I commend you for choosing a dissertation topic that has the potential to lead to improvement in the quality of auditing of public companies," wrote CPB consultant Alister Mason in a congratulatory letter. "I wish you all the best as you conduct your research, and as you subsequently seek publication opportunities for papers that arise out of it."

Burt has been employed at Niagara University since 2013. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University and a master's degree in accounting from Michigan State University. He later obtained a CPA and worked as a public accountant for Sciarabba Walker and as an internal auditor for Cornell University.
