The Purple Eagles are heading to battle breast cancer in their first "Pink Out" game.

Niagara University's Division I women's lacrosse team will raise money at its game against Detroit Mercy on March 14, 2014. The proceeds from the "Pink Out" game will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Through this event, the lacrosse team hopes to involve the local community, student body and other athletes.

"I am glad the team has decided to raise money for a cause like breast cancer," said freshmen Isabella Leon. "Breast cancer is something I can personally connect to, because I know someone who has dealt with it and I believe a lot of people can say the same. This will also give our team a chance to raise money for a good cause and work together."

Raising money through a "Pink Out" game gives the team an opportunity to help out a good cause, and have fun at the same time. The Purple Eagles have teamed up with Susan G. Komen to take part in the foundation's mission, "To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures."

The money raised at the "Pink Out" game for breast cancer awareness will go back into the local community through Komen's Western New York chapter. Nationally, the foundation has invested more than $1.5 billion into cancer research since 1982.

By teaming up with such a large foundation, the players have the chance to not only learn, but show the community how easy it is to make a difference, as well.

"This event allows us to raise money for a great cause by simply doing what we love," said Brittany Delano, a junior on the lacrosse team.

This event is also giving the lacrosse team a chance to team up with other athletes by helping them out with their "pink" games. They, in turn, will ask the other teams on campus to come and show support March 14.

The Niagara women's lacrosse team encourages the community to get involved with this event: attend the game and make donations.

The players will begin to go out into the community and ask local business to donate money or items for baskets, and to just simply help them get the word out about their event within the next few weeks. The team plans on holding mini-fundraisers such as a bake sale, T-shirt sale, and concession stand at all of their home games. The team has created a donation Web page for people to donate money at their convenience.

"One of the main tenets of our program is the idea of service," said head coach Wendy Stone. "We are very fortunate to be members of the Niagara University community, and with that privilege comes the responsibility of giving back to the community.

"The juniors on our team are responsible for choosing a community service project to benefit the organization of their choosing for the team to complete each year. This year, the junior class has decided that our team community service project will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and our efforts will be dedicated not only to raising money, but also to raise awareness about breast cancer through our 'Pink' game in March. I am thrilled that they have chosen such a worthy cause, and look forward to joining our team's efforts throughout the year."
