New changes at Lewiston Welcome Center

An 1812 American flag, rocking chairs and a calendar of events are among the new changes on display at the Village of Lewiston Welcome Center at Academy Park. Deputy Mayor Bruce Sutherland said a team of volunteers is now in place and enjoying interacting with tourists -- including a couple that recently visited from Denmark.

Welcome center volunteers have recently begun adding events to a large, white calendar board by the building's front entrance.

"We would like to become a sort of clearing house for information on the region," said Volunteer Coordinator Loretta Frankovitch. "We already have lovely brochures on most activities around the area, but there are many activities and events that do not necessarily have brochures. Because we have visitors from far and near, we have developed a local events calendar that's on display in the center. We add Artpark activities, Arts Council activities, and any other events of which we are aware."

She's asking readers and residents to keep her team in the loop on River Region activities.

"We love to direct (guests) to our shops, the waterfront, etc. (the stationary things), but there are so many other events going on, we want them to have a choice of options in the area," Frankovitch said.

The welcome center is open from Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. It's located on the corner of Center and South Ninth streets.

"If you haven't stopped in to see the welcome center, please do so," Frankovitch said. "We've had great responses from visitors, and all the volunteers are so enthusiastic about sharing our lovely village with others."
