Stories, snacks & crafts for kids and caregivers starting Dec. 8
The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center has a new program for families. Every month, the venue will host an hour of story time, crafts and snacks in the train station atrium. Stories and crafts will help the youngest visitors engage with the museum's themes of African-American history, freedom and social justice. The schedule includes:
•Saturday, Dec. 8, 10:30 a.m.: December's story hour celebrates the year's end. It features stories about Kwanzaa and diverse customs during this festive month.
•Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, 10:30 a.m.: January's story hour highlights Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of his birthday.
•Saturday, Feb. 9, 10:30 a.m.: February's story hour empowers kids to speak their minds during Black History Month.
•Saturday, March 9, 10:30 a.m.: March's story hour features Harriet Tubman, who is celebrated on Tubman Day, March 10.
•Story Time is free and geared toward children ages 3-9 and their caregivers. Story time does not include admission to the Heritage Center, but Niagara Falls residents can join as Neighborhood Members and visit the museum any time.
About the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center
The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center is a new, experiential museum that reveals authentic stories of Underground Railroad freedom seekers and abolitionists in Niagara Falls, and aims to inspire visitors to recognize modern injustices that stem from slavery and take action toward an equitable society. Open since May, the permanent exhibition, "One More River to Cross," features the rich stories of the Underground Railroad in Niagara Falls, the crucial role played by its location and geography, and the actions of its residents - particularly its African-American residents. The Heritage Center's immersive exhibits and cutting-edge interpretation affirmatively align with the principles of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, whose mission is to connect the past to modern social justice issues - "to turn memory to action."
