Dash’s Market officially begins accepting Supplement Nutritional Assistant Program (SNAP) payments from online shoppers at checkout starting Wednesday, May 4.

This achievement is the culmination of the SNAP online purchasing pilot, which began in January 2017. Dash's Market, through its ecommerce platform, Rosie, was invited by the USDA to participate in the SNAP online purchasing pilot program with the goal of providing access to enough food – for all people at all times – for a safe, active and healthy life.

“It is crucial that we offer our customers options when it comes to their online shopping experience,” said Alexa Dash, director of ecommerce. “The opportunity to offer SNAP online removes financial barriers for families in our community, allowing all individuals to access healthy quality products.”

A press release explained SNAP, formerly known as the food stamp program, provides food-purchasing assistance for families living in the U.S. It is a federal program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, under the Food and Nutrition Service, though benefits are distributed by each state's Division of Social Services or Children and Family Services. SNAP is the largest nutrition assistance program, with over 40 million Americans estimated to have participated annually in the 21st century. More than two-thirds of SNAP participants are families with children, while a third are households with senior citizens or people with disabilities.

Rosie’s technology and development teams prioritized SNAP online with the help of Rosie’s retailers, FNS and Fiserv. The result is Dash’s ecommerce platform, Rosie, which enables the store to accept SNAP online payments from households that rely on EBT benefits. With the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition’s most recent expansion of the SNAP program to online platforms, this feature allows recipients to take greater advantage of SNAP/EBT payments at their local grocery stores.

“With grocery ecommerce a part of our everyday lives, it's essential for independent grocers to have the tools they need to provide solutions to the underserved in their communities, and to compete and win against national chains,” said Dave Makar, Rosie’s chief customer officer. “Technology continues to advance, and we’re proud to be a partner of USDA impacting millions of SNAP recipients nationwide.”

Dash’s Market is a fourth-generation, family-owned and -operated supermarket chain located in New York, with four locations throughout the Buffalo area. The original Dash’s was opened by Joseph and Mary Dash in 1923. In 1951, Frank and Virginia opened their store, and today their son, Joe Dash, owns and operates Dash’s Markets along with his children. Visit dashsmarket.com.
