With a new school year underway and the challenges of COVID-19 being addressed, the Lewiston-Porter School District has announced the return of its popular community education program for fall-winter 2021.

“The Possibilities Are Endless,” proclaims the cover on the district’s community education course and registration catalog. Available to residents of the Lew-Port district and beyond, a vast array of in-person course offerings appeal to just about every age and taste.

“The Lewiston-Porter Central School District is thrilled to once again open our doors to the entire community as we reestablish our community education program for fall 2021,” Superintendent Paul Casseri said. “In-person learning will once again be offered this fall, with our largest class selection yet.”

Under the direction of coordinator Anita Muzzi, the fall program offers 100 class offerings, with 45 all-new programs. Program headings include class categories covering exercise; arts and crafts; cooking; gardening; health and wellness; certifications; finance; learning and leisure; college test prep; music; and technology.

“This season, we are delivering our largest, most engaging program yet,” Muzzi said. “With the ability to once again offer classes that are in-person, we were certain the community would crave the opportunity to engage with others, and participate in fun, educational classes once again.”

And what of the program offerings? Well, as noted, they run the gamut of just about every taste and interest. Among the 45 new class offerings there’s such titles as: “STEAM Saturdays” classes for children; “Soap a Scrub Making”; “Comprehensive Beginner Sugar Cookie Decorating”; “Make Cake Pops Like a Pro”; “Circuit Design Space Instruction”; “Introduction to Meal Prepping”; “For Spring Wow, Plant Now!”; “Grow More Butterflies”; “Grow the Stinking Rose”; “German Lebkuchen Cookies”; “Mexican Migas”; “Let’s Get Smokin’ ”; “Aqua Zumba”; “Fitness Drumming”; “Introduction to Gut Health”; “Secrets to Sleep”; “Benefits of Detoxing from Sugar”; “An Actor Relocates”; “Europe on a Budget”; “Introduction to Grant Writing”; “Italian Language & Culture”; “CPR-Basic Life Support”; “Face Yoga”; “Fitness Drumming”; “Hooked on Pierogi”; and “Untethering Your Inner Self.”

“A key goal of our program is to offer opportunity for members of our community to explore programs to enrich their lives and help them on the journey of lifelong learning,” Casseri said. “We are confident that you will enjoy the chance to explore such varied topics from cooking, art, learning a new language and so much more.”

Muzzi pointed out that what make this program so attractive is the involvement of businesses and professional interests from the River Region community and beyond.

“Lewiston-Porter community education has teamed up once again with local businesses, artisans and individuals who are experts in their field. This allows us to offer a vast array of subject topics to offer throughout the year. For example, this year we teamed up with the Brickyard Pub and Brewing Company to offer two classes at their location – ‘Let’s Get Smokin” ’ and ‘Basic Home Brewing.’ ”

What’s more, community education also includes a good amount of course offerings geared for the younger set – from preschoolers to middle and high schoolers to young adults . Included are STEAM classes for children aged 3-6 years that will be held on several Saturday mornings throughout the fall; there’s also fun parent-and-me classes with a variety of topics to choose from.

“Children will have the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) together,” Muzzi said.

“We also offering an afterschool program, ‘Spanish for the Elementary Years,’ for grades K-5, and have teamed up again with Code Wizards, which offers students in grades 3-12 classes in computer program coding. Children will also have the opportunity to join the musical theater,” Muzzi said.

Instructor Angela Swistowski invited students to check it out: “Science is better together! I’m excited to have the opportunity to share the wonder of STEM back in the classroom! See you soon, scientists!”

And for young adults, there’s “My Teen & Me” classes.

“These designated classes allow students to attend classes with a parent or guardian. It’s a great opportunity for parents to bond with their children learning something fun together!” Muzzi said.

Casseri said, “We are pleased to have the opportunity to offer in-person learning once again this fall. We are opening our doors to the community with a program that will give you the chance to explore your interests and discover new talents. We are excited to begin the new school year welcoming you back to our campus.”

Community education in-person classes are scheduled to begin Sept. 16 and continue to Dec. 17 on the Lewiston-Porter Creek Road campus. There’s also opportunity for travel under the “Hit the Road” offerings for 2021, with an “Ohio for an Amish Brown Bag Tour,” a “12 Hours in the City” visit to NYC and a tour of the Corning Glass Works in Central New York.
