Fuccillo Toyota comes through with support for American Cancer Society fundraiser

Who better than an automobile dealership to take the lead in a drive-thru fundraiser?

Fuccillo Toyota of Grand Island is giving a lift to the revamped “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.”

Saturday, the American Cancer Society will hold the “Making Strides Buffalo event” as a drive-thru to replace a walk that was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fuccillo Toyota on Thursday gave the endeavor a huge start by hosting the kickoff event at its Alvin Road location.

Fuccillo is sponsoring the “STRIDES” letters that are a popular photo op for participants in the event.

“Saturday is our ‘Drive to Make Strides in Buffalo ‘event,” said Mariah Turk, senior manager/community development for the American Cancer Society. “It’s replacing our walk event that typically takes place. It’s a drive-thru celebration where people can come out to the Walden Galleria, they’ll stay in their cars, they’ll grab things they normally would at our traditional walk, but it’s all from the comfort of their car. So the only time they’ll be exiting is to take pictures in front of Fuccillo’s STRIDES letters.”

“Survivors can come out, grab a swag bag, and be able to celebrate making strides, but in a safe way,” Turk said.

The Fuccillo support for the American Cancer Society event is another example of its community involvement.

“Toyota asked us as a group, to get involved with ‘Making Strides in Buffalo,’ ” said Tom Fogarty of Fuccillo. “We donated $10,000 to the cause because in this area especially there’s so many people touched by all sorts of different cancers.”

Fogarty said Fuccillo of Grand Island was also part of “Fuccillo Feeds the Front Lines,” a fundraiser for first-responders at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Things have changed here,” Fogarty said of life in the pandemic. “We just want the community to know that we’re involved. We just want to show the community that we do care.”

The “Drive to Make Strides” event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the Walden Galleria Mall parking ramp.
