High water levels wreaked havoc with the Niagara County boating season, and led some to skip out on visiting the villages of Lewiston and Wilson this summer. Not wanting a repeat of this in 2020 – and seeking to reinforce the idea local stores are open for business – Village of Wilson Mayor Arthur Lawson and Village of Lewiston Mayor Anne Welch held a “Lake Ontario 2020 Preparedness Meeting” Thursday at the Red Brick Municipal Building.

At the roundtable, they brainstormed ideas with Assembly members Angelo Morinello and Mike Norris, as well as tourism leaders John Percy of Discover Niagara USA, Jennifer Pauly of the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce, and Sara Capen of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area/Discover Niagara Shuttle. Topics included working together to market sportfishing, showcasing what’s unique about the villages, finding grants, and putting forth a united front to offset negative and/or misleading notions.

Attendees pledged to work together and share resources to draw in additional visitors next year.

Also in attendance was Village of Lewiston Deputy Mayor Vic Eydt, Anne Basile and James Muscoreil of Wilson Tourism, Porter Councilman Larry White, Kathleen Neville of the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative Commission and Morinello Chief of Staff Eamon Weber.

The group will meet with Youngstown leaders in November.
