It Happened to Alexa Foundation announced a whole new happening for this summer.

The 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, which assists victims of rape and sexual assault, will hold a different kind of benefit this August. Dubbed “Buffalo’s Biggest Basket Raffle,” the all-ages event will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, inside the RiverWorks recreational waterfront complex, 359 Ganson St., downtown Buffalo.

Many associate It Happened to Alexa, formerly of Lewiston and now at Larkinville, for its fun-filled Great Contraption Race. That event was held earlier on the lower river off Lewiston and then last summer on the Buffalo River. For 2019, Executive Director Kate Fowler said the race has been put on hold to allow for better planning in 2020.

In its place will be “Buffalo’s Biggest Basket Raffle,” to be held on the Buffalo Roller Derby track inside RiverWorks. Fowler said the all-day basket raffle would be the featured event that day at the popular Buffalo River complex.

“Everyone really loves a basket raffle, so we thought, let’s make ‘Buffalo’s Biggest’ and have our target having around 500 baskets,” Fowler said. “Our goal is to establish a record for the largest number of baskets, containing donated prizes and/or merchandise to be raffled off at a charity event. It is our hope that this year’s event will not only be successful at raising much-needed funds for the continued assistance to survivors of sexual assault, but will be a venue for us to share information on the work we do as well as our 2019-20 initiatives.”

Event organizers are now seeking the community’s help to make this a success: “We are looking for basket donations, volunteers to help on the day of, and invite everyone to come down to RiverWorks to try and win some amazing baskets!” Fowler said.

She invited those who may be interested in donating or helping out to contact It Happened to Alexa and join in what’s expected to be a fun event.

“Large or small, your contribution can change lives,” Fowler said. “Your consideration is greatly appreciated. We hope to see you at Buffalo RiverWorks on Aug. 17!”
