Tuesday evening, Niagara-Wheatfield High School hosted the “Race for Hope” during its track meet versus Kenmore West.

Along with the track meet, there was a basket auction, bake sale and, of course, tons of pink apparel.

Proceeds from the event benefitted Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

The Falcons and Blue Devils donned their fair share of pink to honor those who have fought and are still fighting the battle versus cancer.

Prior to the meet, both teams, coaches and parents who have fought and continue to fight cancer took a lap around the track as one. Up in front of the line, the group was led by a pink banner that donned the name of the event.

“Race for Hope” drew an impressive audience who came out to raise money for a good cause and show their support, while raising awareness.

The event was also one of several the school has put on to raise awareness for a cause.

Falcons coach Alan Pogel was happy with the meet results, as both the girls and boys N-W teams won, but the bigger result was the near $2,500 the event raised.

“The turnout from the community was outstanding,” Pogel said. “As a program, we were very excited about the opportunity to unite with our colleagues from another school and the N-W community to celebrate those who have rung the bell at Roswell.

“It was equally important to join forces and offer support and encouragement for our friends and neighbors who are fighting this dreaded disease. You could feel the strength from the unified spirit of Niagara-Wheatfield and Ken-West boys and girls, as well as the community members as they took this lap as one committed and dedicated group.

“This was a student-driven initiative to raise funds, raise awareness, promote sportsmanship and community involvement, and we can all be very proud of our student-athletes and their families.”
