Time and time again, Niagara-Wheatfield High School is doing everything it can to help give back to those in need. From students to teachers and faculty, donating time and effort is at the heart of the Falcons community.

Student-athlete Samantha Maghrak is another example of N-W giving back.

Maghrak was selected to represent Niagara-Wheatfield as the Student of the Year. In so, Maghrak is now doing her part to help raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The senior soccer and track athlete gathered a group of close family and friends, including N-W students Madison Evarts, Sydney Crangle, Anna Mohilewsky and Allie Dena, to help with her upcoming wine and chocolate tasting event.

From 6-9 p.m. on March 22, Maghrak and her team will host the evening at Events at Wurlitzer, 908 Niagara Falls Blvd. Included at the event will be wine and chocolate samples, live music by Queen City Lights, hors d’oeuvres, basket raffles, vendors, a cash bar and giveaways.

Presale tickets for attendees over the age of 21 can be purchased for $30 at https://wineandchocolateforlls.eventbrite.com, or remaining tickets can be purchased at the door for $40. Attendees must be at least 18 years old, and ages 18-21, as well as designated drivers, will cost $20 admission. All proceeds will benefit the LLS.

Vendors at the event will sell painted wine glasses and jewelry, while Platter’s Chocolates will have all kinds of chocolate to be sampled, Maghrak said. In addition, Gates Circle Liquor Store on Delaware Avenue will be present with wine samples.

For the basket raffle, big ticket items include a $50 spa gift card, $50 Amazon gift card and a trip to the Buffalo Tasting Room at Black Button Distilling, with a value of $140.

Maghrak said the event’s cause is near and dear to her, as leukemia has struck a family member.

“My task is to raise as much money for leukemia and lymphoma in a seven-week period,” she said. “I committed to do it, because my Aunt Carol is suffering from leukemia.”

Additionally, Maghrak said that Niagara-Wheatfield HS is one of 12 teams from other local high schools competing in the initiative to raise money for causes.

Maghrak goes further about the event on its website and said, “As part of the Student of the Year campaign, hosted by LLS, this fun and exciting event has been organized to raise funds to further research efforts in hopes for a cure. This campaign funds programs that provide financial and emotional support to those battling these diseases in our local WNY area.

“The evening will be three hours filled with wine tasting, chocolate tasting, snacking, live music, raffles, vendors with samples, and fun activity stations all with the intention to lend a helping hand to those in need in our community.”
