Each year, the incoming state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects a theme for the state commanders special project. During the 2017-18 period, then-Cmdr. Michael Burke’s theme was homeless veterans. Each of the eight districts in the state of New York were asked to submit the names of organizations that assisted homeless veterans in their respective areas.

District 7, which consists of the counties of Niagara, Orleans, Wyoming, Livingston and Genesee, nominated three such organizations, including Lockport CARES emergency homeless shelter. Lockport CARES was eventually selected to receive a portion of the donations received by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of New York during the year.

The donations received by the state were redistributed to the eight districts to facilitate the continued work with veterans in need. Previous organizations in District 7 that have received donations for veterans in need include Eagle Star housing and S.E.R.V. Niagara.
