Falcons Flashback: Boys hockey gets 2 wins in NYC; Wrestling finishes strong in Cheektowaga Duals

This past week in Falcons athletics saw a mix of results for the season’s winter teams.

The boys hockey team picked up two wins in as many days on their trip to New York City.

The team defeated Rye High School, 5-4, this past Saturday, then Scarsdale, 6-5, on Sunday.

On Saturday, Ben Shapiro, Caleb Lee, Cam King, Trevor Conte and Chris Cacciatore all score goals.

On Sunday, Cacciatore added two more goals for a team-high seven on the season. Also scoring was Anthony Delisanti, Austin Durandetto, Ben Foster and Owen Hayes. King added two assists, while Lee, Timothy Jones, Riley Mackenzie, Conte and Dylan Bennett also added helpers.

The boys play rival Williamsville North at 7:45 p.m. Friday at the Northtown Center in a rematch of last year’s Section VI Large School Final.

The girls Niagara County hockey team has had a rough go of things in its inaugural season, but the team put up its highest goal output of the season in a 9-7 loss to Clarence/Amherst/Sweet Home.

On the season, Niagara-Wheatfield athletes Sarah Jackson, Amanda Jackson and Francesca Williamson have scored a combined six goals (4,1 and 1, respectively). Amanda also has four assists, Williamson has two and Julia Gerspach has three assists.

Despite a tough start to the season, freshman goaltender Annie Riek has made the most saves of any goaltender in the league with 180.

The girls next battle is at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on the road versus West Seneca/Hamburg/Eden.

The boys basketball team recently picked up its first Niagara Frontier League win. For a report on the team, visit wnypapers.com.

The girls basketball team has started off slow this season, dropping its first two contests versus Lockport and Kenmore West.

In a 53-31 loss versus Lockport, Elizabeth Beutel led the team with 10 points and five rebounds. Also, LeGary Jackson added 4 points and 10 rebounds, and Mackenzie-Mae Smith notched 5 points and eight rebounds.

Versus West, Jackson led the team with 11 points, while Smith followed her with 7.

The team’s next matchup is at home at 6:30 p.m. Friday versus North Tonawanda.

The boys swimming and diving team fell to 2-3 on the season after dropping consecutive meets.

Versus Lockport, the Falcons were defeated 106-77. Highlighting the team was the 200 medley relay team of Jack Baumann, Tommy Peltier, Christian Castillo and Paul Wissell, as well as Chris Dyer, who was victorious in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Baumann was additionally victorious in the 100 backstroke.

Versus Lewiston-Porter, the Falcons lost a close meet, 57-43. Falcons swimmers were victorious in the 200 medley relay, 50 free, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.

The team’s next meet is at 5 p.m. Tuesday versus Kenmore.

The boys and girls bowling teams defeated Grand Island, both 7-0, and then were handed 6-1 defeats by Niagara Falls.

For the boys versus Grand Island, Ryan Kish rolled a high series 639, while Derek Carr rolled the high game of 242. Versus the Wolverines, Jared Farr led the way with a high series 650 and high game 236.

For the girls, versus Grand Island, Hope Hill did it all with high series 579 and high game of 237. In the defeat to Niagara Falls, Francesca Giaquinto led with a high series of 562 and high game of 201.

The two teams next match is versus Lewiston-Porter at 4 p.m. today.

Lastly, the Falcons wrestling squad continued an impressive start to its season after finishing second at the Cheektowaga Duals.

The team was defeated in the championship final, 50-32, to Spencerport.

Four Falcons were nominated to the All-Tournament Team including, Justin McDougald (138 pounds), Jake Thibeault (160), Josh Thibeault (170) and Kevin Halford (220).

The team also defeated last year’s NFL champion Grand Island, Wednesday.
