Diesel technology program visits ethanol plant

The Diesel Technology students in Wes Blidy's class recently toured the Western New York Energy facility in Medina. The facility is the first ethanol plant in the northeast United States. They are a locally owned company with a mission of developing the full potential of Western New York's renewable energy resources.
The students from the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center were treated to a safety video and an overview of the company while they were served refreshments.
"We then went on a tour and the students could not believe all the work that goes into the making of ethanol," said Blidy. The students learned there are many diverse jobs at the company from electricians, maintenance workers, truck drivers, heavy equipment operators and the scale conductor that has to check each load of corn that comes in for moisture and weight.
"I know the students now realize you can use corn grown by local farmers and turn it into fuel," said Blidy.  "It gave them a chance to realize the importance of renewable energy and the jobs that it can generate outside of the company too, from farms to stations."
