Community Missions of the Niagara Frontier is participating in #GivingTuesday on Nov. 27. This event takes place every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and contrasts Black Friday and Cyber Monday, in an effort to kick off the holiday season with generosity to the community.
This is the agency's sixth consecutive year participating in the event.
"Giving Tuesday focuses on giving back during the holiday season, so we are not just caught up in pure consumerism," said Christian Hoffman, director of communications at Community Missions.
Giving Tuesday is designed to help push for a real impact in the community and for those in need, particularly during the winter holiday season. This day brings together a diverse group of people all working toward one common goal: giving back and making a change, however big or small.
For Giving Tuesday, Community Missions gets many volunteers, including 50 local high-schoolers who help to decorate, as well as volunteer in the soup kitchen and clothes closet. Students from Niagara University come in to prepare a hot breakfast that morning, and other volunteers are welcomed for projects throughout the day.
Community members are invited to take part by donating at www.communitymissions.org, or participating in "Dining for Dollars," a promotion where local restaurants donate a portion of their sales during the week of Giving Tuesday to Community Missions.
This year's participating venues:
Village Bake Shoppe, 417 Center St., Lewiston, will donate $1 for each "Cake in A Cup" sold between Nov. 26 and 30.
Parkway Prime, 401 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls, will donate 10 percent of food sales on Monday, Nov. 26.
Anchor Bar, 114 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls, will donate 10 percent of food sales on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
