2-day basketball showcase to return to NFHS

High school basketball season is right around the corner, and with that brings the 19th Cataract City Classic at Niagara Falls High School.
The two-day basketball showcase helps raise money for the Niagara Falls Education Foundation, which helps provide athletic and educational programs, as well as future scholarship opportunities to students in the Niagara Falls City School District.
The tournament begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, as Williamsville North takes on Akron High School. Following that, Grand Island will face Newfane at 6:30 p.m. The nightcap will feature the home Niagara Falls Wolverines versus the reigning Class A Catholic High School state champions and Class A Federation champions The Park School.
The tournament returns at noon Saturday, Dec. 8, as Nichols takes on Buffalo East. At 1:30 p.m. Depew will face Wilson, which will be followed by Sweet Home versus Lewiston-Porter at 3 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. Franklinville will battle versus Medina. At 6 p.m. Bishop Kearney will travel from Rochester to face Williamsville South. Finally, at 7:30 p.m., the showcase will end with Niagara Falls facing Bishop Timon.
A week following the basketball tournament, hockey will be in full display at Hyde Park Ice Pavilion, as the sixth Cataract City Hockey Classic will begin Friday, Dec. 14.
Hockey will start at 5:30 p.m. with Sweet Home facing Starpoint. The new combination of Niagara Falls/Lockport will battle Lewiston-Porter at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Dec. 15, the consolation championship between the losers of the first two games will start at 5:30 p.m., while the championship between the victors begins at 7:30 p.m.
Admission to the events costs $5 and $3 for students who show proper school ID.
