Falcons Flashback: Niagara-Wheatfield athletics making final pushes into playoffs

Boys & girls soccer, girls volleyball eyeing NFL crossover championship game

The fall edition of Niagara-Wheatfield athletics has seen the calendar flip to October and with that means the postseason is near. Several teams will look to make big pushes to finish their seasons and continue in the playoffs.
The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team won its homecoming night game versus Kenmore West, 28-21, last Friday night. The win improved its record to 4-1 and pushed them closer to a playoff spot. The boys and girls cross country teams received one win and loss apiece during a dual meet versus Grand Island and Kenmore East.
The boys lost versus Grand Island and defeated Kenmore East. Overall, Aiden Tribbets finished second place with a time of 19:10. Next for the Falcons was Ian Johnson in fifth place with a time of 19:58 and Donavan Brusino finished eighth with a time of 20:15.
The girls had the same feat, losing to Grand Island and defeating Kenmore East. Victoria Achtziger-Hughes continued her strong season and placed first overall with a time of 21:17. Next for N-W, Sarah Pawlow finished fifth with a time of 23:38, Julia Johnson finished eighth with a time of 24:33 and Elaine Raglow-DeFrance finished ninth with a time of 24:38.
The boys and girls cross country team is back in action at 4:30 p.m. in a meet versus Kenmore West and CSAT at Bond Lake No. 1, 2353 Lower Mountain Road.

The boys soccer team picked up three clutch victories this past week to clinch the Niagara division of the Niagara Frontier League. The team is slated to play in the NFL Crossover Championship versus either Lewiston-Porter or Kenmore East of the Frontier division.
In the three wins, the boys defeated Lockport, Kenmore West and North Tonawanda, 2-0. The wins put the boys record at 12-1 overall (10-1 NFL).
In the win over Lockport, John Osetkowski and Tom Meuller scored goals. Joe Woroniecki and Jacob Vallas added assists.
Versus Kenmore West, Vallas and Kyle Weir netted goals, while Joe Timbello and Raphael Wence assisted the goals.
Lastly, versus North Tonawanda, Osetkowski and Meuller netted the goals once again, with Andrew Ramballi and Alexis Leon adding assists.
The boys finish the season at 10 a.m. Monday at Niagara Falls High School. Following the contest, the boys will play in the Crossover Championship at 5 p.m. Thursday at Kenmore East's Sparky Adams Field.
The girls soccer team went 2-2 this past week with wins over Lockport and Kenmore West and losses versus North Tonawanda and Williamsville East.
In the 1-0 victory over Lockport, Briana Zayatz netted the game-clinching goal off an assist from Erin Weir.
The team stuffed the stat sheet versus Kenmore West in an 8-0 win. Zayatz, Weir and Jessica Maroney netted two goals apiece, while Samantha Maghrak and Allie Dena also found the back of the net.
North Tonawanda has been the Achilles heel for the girls this season. The team tied once earlier in the season before the defeat Tuesday. The girls were also defeated, 1-0, by Williamsville East.
They finish the NFL schedule at 10 a.m. Monday versus Niagara Falls. Following the season finale, the girls will play in the NFL Crossover Championship versus Grand Island at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sparky Adams Field.
The girls swim team improved its record to 6-0 this past week with meet wins over Kenmore East and Lockport.
The girls won all but three races versus Kenmore East in its victory.
Versus Lockport, Sydney Dippold, Abigail Potts, Hannah Seiler and Amaya Springer won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:12.12. Also, Alyssa Hall was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:19.94; Springer won the 200-yard IM; Danielle Carlson won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle; Seiler won the 100-yard butterfly; Maegan Mueller won the 500-yard freestyle; Carlson, Hannah Pauly, Bryar Confer and Hall won the 200-yard free relay; and Dippold won the 100-yard backstroke.
The girls next meet is at 5 p.m. today at Kenmore West.
The boys volleyball team was defeated 3-0 versus Kenmore West last Thursday. The team looked to pick up its first league victory versus Grand Island Thursday.
The girls volleyball team continued its domination of the NFL this past week. The team defeated North Tonawanda, Kenmore West, CSAT and Grand Island all 3-0.
The girls are now 13-0 and will likely play in its second NFL Crossover Championship game in as many years with a strong finish to the season.
The team's next match is at 4:45 p.m. versus Lewiston-Porter.
