Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara treated to special concert
The Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra from Lancaster High School gave a special performance Thursday morning for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities supported by Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara.
The musical concert was made possible through a grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; administered by Arts Services Initiative of Western New York Inc.
Roberta Nickelsen, fine arts coordinator at OUN said, "The 2018 grant project, 'Comfort and Joy' explores specific ways art feeds the soul and creates opportunities for self-expression. This grant enables us to provide a wide array of activities to individuals who might not normally have access to these types of creative experiences. It also reinforces our continued commitment to the inclusion of people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities as contributing members of the community."
In addition to the musical performance by the Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra, dance, photography, and other art workshops are part of this grant, which was designed to provide individuals with the opportunities to experience new cultural venues, strengthen OUN's ties with the community, and emphasize the diversity of music as a means of artistic self- expression.
The Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra consists of student musicians from Lancaster Central High School. Launched in 1974, the group is the third oldest established continuing steel drum program in the United States. Since its inception, the Carnival Kids have recorded several CDs and traveled extensively.
