Summer-like heat and sunshine didn't stop Golden Age members from enjoying a unique opportunity: kayaking on the Niagara River.
Last Tuesday, this one-of-a-kind paddle led by experienced kayakers Paul Leuchner and Recreation Supervisor Joe Menter, took a sold-out crowd to explore the heron rookery at Motor Island and to explore the East River Marsh. The trip was filled with paddlers of all ability levels who gained new skills and strengths while kayaking on the Niagara River.
Recreational opportunities, such as this kayaking trip, have a multitude of benefits to senior citizens. Most importantly, socializing is the best way to keep everyone healthy on the inside and out, boosting feelings of well-being. Exploring one's community and trying something new is a way to stay engaged and keep the brain actively learning. Exercise is a great way to strengthen the heart, muscles, and increases oxygenated blood flow through the body; exercising in a group setting is much easier than doing so alone! Lastly, getting involved in different recreational opportunities gives one the chance to take care of the mind, body, and spirit - the goal of these recreational opportunities. It may be hard to take this first step to try something new, but it's very important.
The Golden Age Center has many consistent programs that members have been enjoying for years. New programs such as this kayaking trip have enticed and interested both existing and new members.
Another unique kayaking trip is scheduled for the fall and "Learn to Kayak" classes are being offered for senior citizens to enjoy in July and August, in conjunction with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Those interested in any of the opportunities can call the Golden Age Center at 716-773-9682.
