Island student enjoys health career program

... This summer, 196 high school students are being given the opportunity to take an inside look at a health career. These students represent 59 Erie County High Schools, participating in the Health Careers Recruitment Program sponsored by the United Health Foundation of WNY Inc. ...

They select from thirty-eight different health careers... and spend six weeks in a health related facility...

... Salvatore Andola of 855 Legion Drive is working in the Medical Lab at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.... He said, "I applied for this program because my dream has always been to become a doctor... I greatly appreciated this opportunity."

Town of GI may install computers: acquire River Oaks plant

The Grand Island Town Board is taking a long, hard look at installing a computerization program in most town departments.

At a special meeting Monday, the board agreed to withhold decision for several weeks on whether to employ a consulting firm to study the situation and recommend the system which would be of most benefit on a cost as well as a long-rage basis.

The board also discussed the possibility of acquiring the package sewer plant built in 1973 to serve what was then considered to be the first phase of the 1100 River Oaks complex.

Outstanding Isle recreation plan unveiled

...Improvements in Veterans Park, outlined in the town-wide master plan unveiled Monday in the Middle School, are in some ways already underway...

... Recreation needs to be developed throughout the Island include community and neighborhood bike trails... as well as an estimated $5 million worth of leisure time and athletic time equipment in the 100 plus acre Veterans Park. ...

Proposed sites include a 25 acre community park ... a pedestrian plaza with an amphitheater and water area... a gymnasium and pool ... and soccer, football and softball fields.

... Kotz & Associates, Syracuse Consultants, with the assistance of Recreation Director Linda Tufillaro and the Town Parks & Recreation Advisory board, designed the plan.

Pataki visits Erie County to announce community, cultural enhancements.

Gov. George E. Pataki announced on Tuesday more than $4 million in federal funding for local community enhancement projects in the Buffalo area, as well as nearly $6.2 million in grants to help create and retain jobs, provide affordable housing and improve public services in nearby counties.

... The funding is good news for Grand Island as it will receive $481,135 for a bicycle/pedestrian path and the construction of shoulders.

A six foot-wide shoulder along both sides of East-West Park Road from Baseline Road to the New York State Thruway overpass will be constructed...also, from the Thruway overpass, the town will build a Class 1 12-foot wide trail parallel to East West Park Road. ...

... The enhancements will begin during the 2003 construction season.
