Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, has announced that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed Assembly bill 10227-A into law. The Ceretto-sponsored public safety legislation reduces costs on local taxpayers. The measure will allow injured Niagara Falls firefighter Richard E. Mylchreest to retire. Mylchreest was hurt in the line of duty and has been receiving disability assistance as a result.
Ceretto noted that the law will help enhance public safety while reducing costs on Niagara Falls taxpayers.
Mylchreest's absence required his colleagues to work additional overtime hours, and his disability status prevented Niagara Falls from hiring a new, full-time firefighter. This increased local costs while leaving the Niagara Falls Fire Department understaffed.
"I am proud to have sponsored this important piece of legislation," Ceretto said. "Now, one brave firefighter may retire with dignity, and a new firefighter can be hired to help save lives and protect our community. The retirement of Richard Mylchreest is fair compensation for his dedication and public service."
"This common-sense measure benefits the Niagara Falls firefighters and saves the City of Niagara Falls financially," said Jason Cafarella, president of Local 714 (Niagara Falls firefighters). "We are very thankful to Assemblyman John Ceretto and Senator Mark Grisanti for getting this bill passed and Governor Andrew Cuomo for signing it into law."
