Grand Island accolades, July 6

This past Wednesday, the Grand Island American Legion Post No. 1346 presented scholarships to two graduating Grand Island High School seniors.

Three residents of Grand Island were among 1,086 students from Ithaca College who received degrees during the college's commencement ceremony held in May 2012.

James Sica received a degree from Ithaca College's School of Humanities and Sciences with a major in writing.

Theodore Slipko received a degree from Ithaca College's School of Business with a major in business administration.

Catherine Skovron graduated from Ithaca College's School of Communications with a major in communication, management and design

The College at Brockport, State University of New York, recently honored two students from Grand Island who excelled academically by naming them to the dean's list for the spring 2012 semester.

Kara Dudley and Chelsea Ross were both named to the dean's list with honors.

Students who earn a grade-point average of 3.70 to 3.99 are named to the dean's list with Honors at The College at Brockport.

James Wiles has been named to the University of Delaware's dean's list for spring 2012.

Wiles is from Grand Island.

To meet eligibility requirements for the dean's list at the University of Delaware, a student must be enrolled full time and earn a grade-point average of 3.33 or above (on a 4.0 scale) for the semester.

Cornell University has announced that Jordan Toth of Grand Island has graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science with the Class of 2012 during commencement ceremonies in Ithaca  on May 27.

Niagara University held its annual commencement ceremonies on May 12 and 13.

Nineteen students from Grand Island were among those who received  bachelor's degrees on May 12: Lindsey Boyle, Amanda Carr, Chase Cedrone, Daniel Gadawski, Deborah Green, Alex Gutt, Kara Karnyski, Andrew Lee, Eric Madia, James McCoy, Meagan Millar, Sara Moretta, Aaron Moseley, Jennifer Mueller, Rachel Olszewski, Matthew Riley, Rebecca Sobol, Katherine Trimper and Morgan Weir.

The graduate exercises were held May 13. Thirteen students from Grand Island were among those who received master's degrees: Cortney Bota, Sara Boulden, Michael Coty, Nicholas Demarco, Rebecca Fast, Ami Fernandez, Amanda Finn, Michael Gallagher, Corinda Grimaldi, Matthew Mergel, Ashley Scanlon, Lori Soos and Kenton Stancliff.

Megan Karpie, a member of the 2012 graduating class at Grand Island High School, was named to the second team All-Western New York Academic Team by Business First.

Schools across the eight-county region were invited to nominate their smartest and most accomplished seniors for evaluation by a nine-member panel of editors and college admissions directors. A total of 117 schools responded, submitting 415 names for consideration. This year's 100 honorees are divided into three groups. The first team consists of the 25 students who, in the panel's opinion, have the strongest records of academic excellence, school leadership and community involvement. Twenty-five runners-up constitute the second team, and the remaining 50 hold special mention designations.

Eric Bellanca, son of Terri and Mark Bellanca of Grand Island, has enrolled for fall 2012 admission at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Bellanca will study engineering in RIT's Kate Gleason College of Engineering and has been awarded an RIT Achievement Scholarship.

He is a 2012 graduate of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute.
