Frances Yensan heads Historical Society

Miss Frances Yensan of Whitehaven Road was installed as president on Thursday, June 1, during a membership picnic supper at River Lea. All but Mrs. Peck are beginning their second terms in their stated offices.

During the preceding business meeting, Miss Yensan announced that the society has received official notice of having been granted its permanent charter by the New York State Board of Regents on April 28, 1972. Miss Yensan also appointed Mrs. Bulan house chairman for the River Lea Museum, Peggy Christiansen, editor of the society's newsletter, Mazie Dommell as hospitality chairman, and Joan Droit as chairman of the Research and Display Committee. And on to Norway

Hundreds of people, binoculars in hand, lined the banks of East River Road to catch a glimpse of a replica of a Viking warship, the Hjemkomst from Duluth, Minn. The ship was heading for the Erie Barge Canal en route to New York City, where it will begin the trip across the Atlantic to Norway.

Sixteen oarsmen from the West Side Rowing Club volunteered to take the ship from the Erie Basin Marina to the Barge Canal to give the crew a rest. The trip from New York City to Norway is expected to take six weeks.

Chamber Trade Show to become annual event

A steady stream of Islanders and mainlanders visited the Chamber of Commerce Trade Show at the Buffalo Launch Club despite the gloomy weather. Although a first-time presentation by the Chamber, there is every indication it will become an annual event. Close to 30 businesses set up to visually display what they had to offer.

Show co-chairmen Rod Reisdorf and Bob Piatek were commended for arranging the program to allow small businesses to display their products and services in the newly decorated club, and the Buffalo Launch Club's chicken barbeque added to the day's events.

Residents come out for open house

Erie County Legislator Charles M. Swanick, the Erie County Sherriff's Office and the Grand Island Town Police Department held an "open house" at 1856 Whitehaven Road to introduce residents to their new home.

Not only does this location offer the community police services, but Swanick's district office is also at the same location to assist residents with any county questions and information they may require. The Erie County Sheriff's ATV Squad, the department's Mounted Patrol, the K-9 division, and the D.A.R.E. van were all onsite. The Grand Island Police and Animal Control Units also had representatives on-hand.

Attendees also were able to enjoy refreshments courtesy of Tim and Bob Rockwood from Rockwood Collision; Tops Markets; and John Simon, owner of Super Gas. Free gunlocks were also available to the public.

The Grand Island Dispatch provided free parking for the public, as it's located right across the street from the legislator's office.
