Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center gave its nursing staff a National Nurses Week surprise to remember Wednesday when officials announced the hospital will honor its nurses for their dedication and quality of care as part of the 2013 Premier.

The announcement was made by President and CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo and Vice President for Foundation and Community Relations Ann Marie Tucker during a Nurses Day reception at The Heart Center of Niagara.

The Premier is Memorial's annual dinner and entertainment gala. The medical center and its skilled nursing facility, the Schoellkopf Health Center, have a combined 295 nurses providing patient care.

"Memorial's nurses are the most devoted caregivers I have ever had the privilege of working with," Ruffolo said. "Their dedication, compassion and commitment to provide the highest quality care for our patients never waver. They are truly deserving of this special recognition."

"I call them the angels of health that make sure we go home healthier than when we enter the hospital," said Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Vijay Bojedla, M.D. "Without their courteous and passionate care, everything would come to a standstill."

"It is both an honor and a privilege to lead this outstanding team of dedicated managers and nursing staff," said Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Joanne Krolewski, R.N., B.S.N. "They provide excellent care to their patients and families every single day. Beyond that they also care and take care of each other."

Krolewski noted that Memorial is renowned for the lifelong commitment many of its nurses have made to serving patients in Niagara Falls.

"We have seven registered nurses with 40 or more years of experience and another 45 who have worked here between 30 and 40 years," Krolewski said. "These are our rocks - nurses who have brought care and comfort to generations of Western New York residents and untold thousands of visitors from around the world."

Memorial's 244 registered nurses and 51 licensed practical nurses play a critical role in the delivery of health care, working in a variety of settings including the ER1 Emergency Department, Heart Center of Niagara, Mary C. Dyster Women's Pavilion, telemetry unit, intensive care/critical care unit, stroke center, surgical services, behavioral health units, medical/surgical units and the Schoellkopf Health Center. In addition, they provide thousands of hours of health and wellness instruction, including health screenings, throughout the community each year.

The 2013 Premier will be held Jan. 19 at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel.
