The first Earth Bowl Festival will take place Saturday, June 30, from 4 to 7 p.m., overlooking the scenic Niagara River, at the Riverside Salem United Church of Christ Environmental Cottage on Grand Island.

The afternoon features music by local singers Nan Hoffman, Joe Tumino and the Bloodthirsty Vegans. There will be food demos, film screenings, plant sale, games, family activities and more. People will be invited to walk the unique "Labyrinth" that is marked by rocks from around the world, enjoy woodland trails, and visit the only straw bale building on Grand Island, constructed with green materials such as earth, straw, sand, bamboo, wood and recycled glass.

A delicious, vegetarian dinner including entrees, salads, breads and desserts, with vegan, wheat-free and dairy-free options will be served in beautifully designed, hand-thrown artisan bowls, created by potter George Schaeffer and six local potters. Once the meal has ended, the bowls will be sent home with diners who can continue to enjoy using them.

Earth Bowl Festival is a fundraiser to help support the 9th annual "World on Your Plate," a community food forum that seeks to restore the earth by promoting sustainability for farmers, farm workers, and consumers alike; advance education and action on issues of food safety, security, and sovereignty; and create a table where all are welcome. World on Your Plate takes place Oct. 12 and 13 at Daemen College in Amherst, and will feature keynote speakers Mark Kastel, co-director of the Cornucopia Institute, the country's premier industry watchdog, as well as Brendan Brazier, professional Ironman triathalete and creator of Vega nutritional foods.

Tickets for the event are $40, and include dinner, concert, all activities and games, and a unique bowl. Children under 12 may attend for $10, but no bowl is included. The concert begins at 2 p.m., and dinner will be served around 5 p.m.

The church is located at 3449 W. River Road. Parking is available along the river.
