Christian Heights Camp, a youth camp located in Little Valley that operates under the direction of George L. Brown of Lewiston, announced this week it has reached 75 percent of its goal to raise funds for a new swimming pool.

"Fundraisers have been held in Little Valley and Niagara Falls with great success," says Brown. He reports that many friends of the camp have responded with generous donations, which are being matched by an anonymous donor up to the first $10,000. Contributions to the fund drive may be directed to Christian Heights with a designation of "pool fund" and sent to George L. Brown, director, 4510 Porter Center Road, Lewiston, NY 14092 or Barb Kolodziej, treasurer, 9360 Rivershore Drive, Niagara Falls, NY 14304.

The camp board of directors has tapped Brown to again serve as camp director this summer. Brown has been associated with Christian Heights since 1961. He is a retired high school counselor having worked for Niagara-Wheatfield for 32 years where he also taught earth science and mathematics. He has been involved in Christian ministry since moving to Lewiston in 1963. In addition to his camp work, he has ministered to the "unchurched" in this community and served two churches. His primary ministry, though, is the camp work he shares with his wife, Maurine.

The board also approved the appointment of Aimee Peters as assistant director. Peters stated that she "is excited to be the assistant director again this year!" She has been volunteering at Christian Heights for 12 years as a counselor, lifeguard, and activities director.

For 64 years Christian Heights has served the youth of Western New York as a non-denominational, not-for-profit, independent summer camp. It was begun by a group of families from the LaSalle Church of Christ. They envisioned a place for Christian recreation, buying an abandoned dairy farm near Little Valley and converting it into a children's camp.

With its roots in Niagara County, Christian Heights has predominantly served youth from the local area, although many campers have also come from the Southern Tier, other states and Canada. The campgrounds are also used by Christian Youth Enterprises for its Camp Agape program and St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church for its Family Camp. Other groups use the facilities for weekend retreats.

Christian Heights is located on a hilltop just outside the Cattaraugus County seat. The 150-acre site features six bunkhouses, a dining/recreation hall, staff housing, caretakers' house, shower-first aid-office building, a few RV hook-ups, and a basketball court, ball field and hiking trails.
