The Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Center will hold its sixth annual Save-A-Pet Art Gallery fundraiser, Friday, March 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, located on the Lew-Port Creek Road campus.

As part of its Character Education Program, Intermediate Principal Andrew Auer reports the school has partnered with Save-A-Pet to help find good homes for stray or unwanted dogs and cats. "They do not have a 'shelter,' so pets awaiting adoption are fostered in the homes of volunteers," he said.

Save-A-Pet offers financial assistance for the spaying and neutering of privately owned cats and is funded solely through the support of contributions or donations.

Auer said students are now creating works of art to be auctioned off that evening. "Students will also be making dog and cat beds and biscuits, which you will be able to purchase. All of the money made from this sale will go directly to the local chapter of Save-A-Pet," he said.

School officials note there will be several new attractions at this year's event. Save-A-Pet foster parents will be bringing some pets that need to be adopted and the school will hold a pet show with students participating. Small pets in cages will be featured, judges will be on site, each pet will receive a certificate and photo, and prizes will be awarded.

The school notes that dogs will not be featured due to liability considerations, but students will present a photo Wall of Fame of their dogs as an alternative.

A basket auction will also take place and a petting zoo with an animal from the Larson Farm on site. Refreshments will be served, with pizza, water and soda available for sale.

The school adds that donations to Save-A-Pet are appreciated and there will be a donation box in the front lobby.
