Assemblyman John D. Ceretto today released the following statement in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
"The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an inspiring leader who helped to reshape our nation's political, economic and cultural landscape, and I would encourage all Americans to honor his memory on this important day," Ceretto said. "His work in the civil rights movement was truly inspirational, not only to myself, but to millions of people around the world. Dr. King's legacy in the advancement of racial equality must continue to be built upon by the state Legislature to ensure an enhanced quality of life for all New Yorkers."
President Ronald Reagan formally signed Martin Luther King Jr. Day into law on Nov. 2, 1983. It was officially observed for the first time on Jan. 20, 1986, and falls annually on the third Monday in January.
