Christmas crossing free of toll for holiday travelers

Holiday passage over the Niagara River - and through the woods and beyond - is again free for Christmas on the three bridges the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission operates.

The commission announced Tuesday that it will once again offer toll-free travel over the Rainbow, NEXUS-only Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges. The free period runs from 11:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24, until 11:30 p.m. on Christmas day, Sunday, Dec. 25.

"The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission's members and employees extend our warmest wishes for a safe and healthy holiday season to the travelers who use our bridges to visit family or friends, or even to work, on these special days," said Patrick Brown, NFBC board chairman. "As we operate three leading international crossings, we are well aware that thousands of travelers cross our bridges during this 24-hour period, and we want to offer help and a little break for all who do."

For the same period in 2010, 4,036 vehicles crossed westbound and took advantage of the waived $3.25 toll. There were also a total of 5,208 eastbound crossings for the period.

The free passage also allows many of the organization's dedicated staff the opportunity to celebrate the holiday with their families and friends.
