Free activities to brighten up the season

Holiday celebrations kick-off early at the New York Power Authority's admission-free Niagara Power Project's visitors center, the Power Vista, which will open the doors for its annual Festival Trees on Saturday, Dec. 3. As one of the stops along the Holiday Lights of Niagara Tour, the Power Vista's glass walkway will feature a dazzling display of artificial evergreen trees, adorned with energy efficient lights. The trees are decorated for the season by local non-profit groups and will be on display through Jan. 6, 2012.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, deck the halls at the Power Vista's annual "Deck the Halls" holiday party, featuring a special guest appearance by Santa Claus. The day's activities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include photos with Santa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus craft-making with staff members from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Performances by the Niagara Experience Players and an informational exhibit on energy efficient lights with tips on celebrating a green holiday will also be featured.

State Parks will also provide free rides on its Niagara Scenic Trolley between the Gorge Discovery Center and the Power Vista between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the "Deck the Halls" event.

In addition to holiday activities, guests are invited to enjoy the Power Vista's attractions, including displays and interactive exhibits relating to the production of electricity, energy efficiency and the area's history, plus views from the observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge. Parking and admission at the Power Vista are always free.
