In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Niagara University's Student Government Association (NUSGA) was challenged by the Office of Student Affairs and the Campus Ministry Office to assist a Niagara Falls food pantry at one of its neediest times of year. The class representatives from the classes of 2013, 2014 and 2015 responded admirably, delivering nearly $700 worth of food and paper supplies to Divine Mercy.
"It was truly an amazing experience," said senior Sara Kates, vice president of the Class of 2013. "The women at the pantry were so thankful and appreciative for everything."
The donations included food items central to Thanksgiving dinner as well as a selection of year-round culinary staples: 30 boxes of spaghetti, 10 boxes of stuffing, 10 boxes of scalloped potatoes, 30 boxes of macaroni and cheese, 15 boxes of instant mashed potatoes, 10 jars of peanut butter, eight bags of rice, 40 cans of soup, 10 jars of gravy, five boxes of cake mix, 10 cans of chicken broth, 40 rolls of toilet paper, 20 boxes of butter, 10 small turkeys, and much more.
"My hope is that this initiative will become an annual undertaking, with this year's achievement serving as a yardstick for future classes to meet and exceed," said Dr. Hearn, vice president for student affairs. "It is the right and decent thing to do, especially at this time of year, and it corresponds with our mission as a Catholic and Vincentian university."
Earlier this semester, NU students staged a "homeless sleep-out" that raised canned goods and toiletries for the food pantry.
Divine Mercy is located at Our Lady of Lebanon Church, 2437 Niagara St., in Niagara Falls. The mission serves people and families who are in dire need of assistance.
