Grand Island Fire Co. Chief Kevin Koch reports that during the period of Oct. 18 through 24 firefighters and medics handled 33 emergency incidents, including three motor vehicle accidents and a truck fire.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on Oct. 18, GIFC rescue personnel responded to a two-car collision, which occured on Baseline Road near Homeland Road. Both drivers, 83-year-old Shirley Runckel and 22-year-old Jennifer Andrews, both of Grand Island, were evaluated by GIFC medics but declined hospitalization.

On Oct. 19, just after 6 p.m., Grand Island firefighters responded to a reported truck fire on Whitehaven Road near Alvin Road. When GIFC firefighters and engine No. 4 arrived on location, a good Samaritan passerby had already stopped the driver, Christopher Moscati of Grand Island, and applied a hand extinguisher to the fire, which was caused by careless transport of a burning charcoal grill. Deputy Fire Chief Matt Osinski reported that approximately $200 damage was done to the pickup truck bedliner.

GIFC rescue personnel responded shortly before 1 p.m. on Oct. 21 to a two-car motor vehicle accident at 2140 Grand Island Blvd., in front of Tops Market, where 39-year-old Michael Murphy of Niagara Falls was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. He was transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for precautionary followup care. Tiffany Markel, 30, of Niagara Falls was also evaluated by GIFC medics and transported to Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center for additional followup care. Susan Berard, 41, of Niagara Falls, claimed no injuries.

Finally, at 4:13 p.m. on Oct. 24, GIFC firefighters and medics responded to another two-car accident on Baseline Road near the Grand Island Plaza entrance. Karen Ernst, 47, of Grand Island denied injuries; 35-year-old Garry Halliwell of Buffalo also denied injuries, according to Koch.
