For the second straight year and the fourth time in five years, Niagara University's American Chemical Society student chapter has been recognized by The Society Committee on Education. Dr. Mary McCourt, chair of Niagara's biochemistry/chemistry department, received a letter in late September from the society notifying her that the student chapter had been selected for an Honorable Mention Award for activities it conducted during the 2010-11 academic year.

More than 330 reports were submitted to The Society Committee on Education for 2010-11, with only 107 of them receiving honorable mention awards. The list of award-winning chapters will be published in Chemical & Engineering News and in inChemistry, the student member magazine. The award winning chapters will also be honored at the 243rd ACS National Meeting in San Diego on Sunday, March 25, 2012.

The correspondence addressed to McCourt specifically mentioned Dr. Ronny Priefer, a chemistry professor at Niagara and the faculty advisor of the chapter, for "efforts that certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country."

The 50-member NU chapter was recognized for both the quantity and quality of the activities that it held on behalf of the American Chemical Society in 2010-11. Chapters were judged on exceptional activities, programs and initiatives described in chapter reports.

Student-officers for the 2010-11 edition of Niagara's ACS student chapter were Paolo Grenga (president), Megan McGahan (vice president), Annie Laurri (secretary), Ryan O'Laughlin (treasurer), Charles Smith (community service advisor), and Haley McClory (financial advisor). All of the officers have since graduated from NU.
