The Lake Ontario Ordnance Works Community Action Council has announced it will meet next week to review the Sept. 28 U.S. Army Corps workshop findings on the Interim Waste Containment Structure at the Niagara Falls Storage Site.

The LOOW CAC meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Community Resource Building, located on the northern end of the Lewiston-Porter School District Creek Road campus.

The Corps Sept. 28 session, held at the Lewiston Senior Center, provided visitors an in-depth look into the IWCS, a 10-acre containment cell at the NFSS on Pletcher Road which houses consolidated radioactive wastes. Discussed that night were comparisons of the IWCS to a successful remediated Corps site in Fernald, Ohio, and options for future treatment at the NFSS cell. (See Oct. 1 Sentinel).

Corps reps that night also expressed their intent of working with the recently formed LOOW CAC in a sharing of ideas and input. The Corps earlier this year named Doug Sarno as a technical facilitator to work with the community on IWCS issues. Sarno, who held a similar position at the Corps Fernald closure project, is now working with the LOOW CAC group. He reports its Oct. 20 session will include the following:

•A brief review of the key issues presented Sept. 28 in the Army Corps technical memorandum on the IWCS;

•A discussion on input and ideas generated by the community members at the Corps workshop;

•A discussion of topics and issues that the CAC would like to formally present to the Corps in its comments;

•Identifying the process for finalizing the CAC comments by the Oct. 28 due date; and

•Discussing ongoing CAC formation and membership activities.

Arleen Kreusch, outreach specialist for the Corps Special Projects Environmental Team, reports that Corps representatives will be attending the Oct. 20 CAC meeting. Their purpose will be to respond to questions regarding the Fernald Lessons Learned and Waste Disposal Options Technical Memorandum to be used in the development of the feasibility study for the IWCS.

The Oct. 20 CAC meeting is open to the public.
