"It's like Christmas for the teacher," said one student at Lewiston Porter Middle School as Office Max brought in $1,000 worth of school supplies to his classroom.

Lewiston-Porter sixth-grade teacher Linda Harvey received the supplies as one of the nation's Make A Day Better for A Teacher winners.

"I'm so surprised," said Harvey, who had no idea that Office Max was going to visit her with such a gift. "We can use all of these things for our crafts projects, including making cards for veterans, which we do each year."

"There's eraser markers we can use for our Smartboards, calculators, crayons and paper," said Harvey, who also received a chair for her desk.

The credit goes to Harvey's colleague, Amy Golden, who answered an email sent out by Office Max over the summer looking for nominations.

"She's the first person I thought of when I saw the email," said Golden. "She is so modest and does so many things without recognition. She's amazing."

"Her door is always open and she cares very much for the kids," added Golden.

"I'm excited that a teacher took the time to nominate a colleague and then thrilled that a teacher gets to be acknowledged," said Middle School Principal Karen Cuddy-Miller. "There is also a financial benefit with receiving supplies and materials for that classroom, for it's an opportunity to have additional supplies without draining other resources. It's good for the kids."

In addition to the $1,000 in supplies, Harvey also received additional materials donated by Office Max customers at the Niagara Falls store.

Harvey, who has been with the Lew-Port district for more than 20 years, resides in Lewiston.
