Lewiston Library October programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of October.

Classes/Events

•"Gaga for Google!" will be offered Thursday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Google is more than a search engine; this class will explore some of its many uses. The class is for those who are comfortable with Internet Explorer and navigating Web pages. Sign up early, as registration is limited.

•A mail merge course will offered Thursday, Oct. 20, from 10 to 1 p.m. Participants will learn to use Excel to create a database of names and addresses. The database can be used to generate personalized letters and envelopes in Microsoft Word using the mail merge function. Sign up early, as registration is limited.

•Upstate New York Transplant Services will visit the library for a blood drive on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Family Programs

•Tail Waggin Tutors returns for a second year. An open house will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. Children can meet the dogs and handlers and register to participate. Parent attendance is required.

•Celebrate the 110th anniversary of Annie Edson Taylor's trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel. On Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. a special reading of Chris Van Allsburg's children's book "Queen of the Falls," and a drawing contest, will take place. The contest is open to children in grades one through five. No registration required.

•Fire safety day will be held Saturday, Oct 15, at 1 p.m. Children will learn about fire safety with firefighters from Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1. Register in the children's room.

•The library's Halloween party will take place Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. Children are invited to come in costume and bring a small pumpkin. The event includes various games, crafts and activities. Registration is required by Oct. 21.

Clubs and More

•The Lewiston Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. For more information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.

•Moms Book Chat will meet Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. Discussed will be "Mennonite in a Little Black Dress" by Rhoda Janzen.

•The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. No registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144.

•The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Monday, Oct. 10, at Askers Café, 400 Main St., Youngstown. LW will also meet Oct. 24 at the library. Both sessions run from 5 to 8 p.m.

The group consists of area residents who meet regularly to discuss and critique their writing efforts, and exchange ideas and information about the craft. Guest speakers are scheduled as available. For more information, visit www.lewistonwritersgroup.com.

•The Dead Beats Society will meet on Monday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Local History Room. Call Michelle at the library for details, 754-4720, or email [email protected].

•The Coffin Club continues its search for photographers for a new club. Those in high school or college and with a camera, access to a computer and time to spend photographing Niagara-area cemeteries, should call Michelle at the library for details, 754-4720, or email [email protected]

•The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintains a used book room all year long. It is open during library hours. Items for sale include fiction, non-fiction, and children's materials.

•October meetings for the month include the Lewiston Library board of trustees, Monday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m.; Friends of the Library, Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m.; and the Lewiston Garden Club, Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m.

Weekly Story Time

•Alphabet Soup with Miss Ann, for children ages 3 to 5, will be held Mondays, Oct. 3, 17 and 31, at 10:30 a.m. Children are invited to dress up on Oct. 31 for the annual story time parade.

•Lapsit story time with Miss Ann, for children age birth to 23 months, will be held Wednesdays, Oct. 5, 12 and 19, at 9:30 a.m. Children are invited to dress up on Oct. 19 for the annual story time parade.

•Toddler hour with Miss Ann, for children ages 24 months to 3 years, will be held Wednesdays, Oct. 5, 12 and 19, at 10:30 a.m. Children are invited to dress up on Oct. 19 for the annual story time parade.

•Story time with Mrs. Leardini, for children of all ages, will be held Thursdays, Oct. 6, 13 and 20, at 10:30 a.m. Children are invited to dress up on Oct. 20 for the annual story time parade.

Library hours are: Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Lewiston Public Library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 10, for Columbus Day.
