Ontario's Liberals have earmarked roughly $10 million of a promised $52-million Great Lakes clean-up fund that will be used to deal with decades-old toxic hotspots along the Lyon's Creek and the Welland River.

"Frankly I was surprised to see that Niagara still has one of the largest outstanding contributing hot spots on the Canadian side of the Great Lakes," Niagara Falls Liberal candidate Kim Craitor said in a news release, Tuesday.

"By the time you get to the Parkway our rivers look so beautiful. The monies will be used to clean up some toxic sediment that has been deposited in the river beds over the last 100 years and to ensure that agricultural runoff in the area is better contained."
