Foster the People loved by the people

It was a sold-out, standing-room-only crew that attended the Foster the People concert at the Tralf on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The LA band, crowned as "the wunderkinds of indie dance pop," has a huge high school/college crowd following, but it was a very diverse crowd on this night. To be sure, there was a wave of girlish screams heard as Mark Foster and company bounced onstage.

The LA trio's first and only album, "Torches," was released in May of this year, and its No. 1 single, "Pumped Up Kicks," is truly infectious. In 2009, Foster (vocals, keyboards) formed the band with two mates, Mark Pontius (drums, percussion) and "Cubbie" Fink (bass). Two other live musicians tour with FTP, rounding out the sound on stage.

As soon as the room quieted and the band tore into its first song, you could "feel the love in the air," as the neophyte hitmakers cooed, hummed and purred to the audience. The feel good vibe was heightened when Foster jumped backwards, faithfully into the arms of the adoring fans (they were actually petting him). Foster was very adept at "pumping up" the crowd all night long, with his energetic bouncing and cavorting all over the place while he sang.

The Tralf is a perfectly sized venue to see music: big enough to host a decent-sized act, yet intimate enough to get a real vibe for the music. Foster the People was truly a unique and praiseworthy concert experience, and us fans will just continue to watch (and listen to) this up-and-coming band rise and rise.
