Since the middle of May, Niagara University has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, ranked among the country's most environmentally responsible colleges by The Princeton Review, deemed one of The Chronicle of Higher Education's top universities to work for in the U.S., and selected to the 2010-11 list of top colleges by www.CollegesofDistinction.com.

Yesterday, Niagara University received additional recognition, tabbed as one of the best colleges and universities in the Northeast in a report published by The Princeton Review. NU is one of 220 institutions the nationally known education services company recommends in its "Best in the Northeast" section of a website feature, "2012 Best Colleges: Region by Region."

Niagara joins SUNY Buffalo as the only colleges from the Buffalo-Niagara region to appear on the list.

"It has been very encouraging to receive such an influx of positive attention from these prominent, national organizations that most people know well," said the Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, president of Niagara University. "Once again, I must commend our excellent faculty, staff and administrators, who were cited several times by students in The Princeton Review's survey."

The Princeton Review report describes Niagara University as a place where "faculty is dedicated to teaching and takes an active interest in their students' academic and personal growth."

"We're pleased to recommend Niagara University to users of our site as one of the best schools to earn their undergrad degree," said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review's senior vice president and publisher. "We chose it and the other terrific institutions we name as 'regional best' colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs. From several hundred schools in each region, we winnowed our list based on institutional data we collected directly from the schools, our visits to schools over the years, and the opinions of our staff, plus college counselors and advisors whose recommendations we invite. We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us about their campus experiences on our 80-question student survey for this project."

The survey asked students to rate their schools on several issues - from the accessibility of their professors to quality of the campus food - and answer questions about themselves, their fellow students and their campus life. Actual comments from surveyed students are included on the website.

The 220 colleges that The Princeton Review chose for its "Best in the Northeast" list are located in 12 states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The Princeton Review also designated 153 colleges in the Midwest, 121 in the West and 135 in the Southeast as best in their locales on the company's "2012 Best Colleges: Region by Region" lists. Collectively, the 629 colleges named "regional best(s)" constitute about 25 percent of the nation's 2,500 four-year colleges.
