Lewiston Public Library August programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of August.

Special Events

•The library's Adult Reading Program continues until Aug. 19. Those interested in joining the adult summer reading program are asked to sign-up at the circulation desk.

•Friends of the Lewiston Public Library annual book sale opens Friday, Aug. 12, with a "members-only" wine and cheese gathering from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Village of Lewiston Red Brick Municipal Building, North Fourth and Onondaga streets. The book sale is open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday will offer a bag sale, where buyers can fill a bag with books for $5.

•Upstate New York Transplant Services will hold a blood drive, Monday, Aug. 15, from 2 to 7 p.m. in the library's Community Room.

•An email intermediate computer class will be offered Thursday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Twitter session will take place Thursday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign up for both classes at the front desk or call the library at 754-4720.

Family Programs

•The library's six-week summer reading program ("One World Many Stories!") continues through Aug. 22. For further information, contact Ann Siejka at [email protected] or at 754-4720, ext. 226.

•"Jack and the Beanstalk," presented by Omnipresent Puppet Theater and open to children of all ages, will be offered Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m. Register in the Children's Room.

•The Grigg Lewis Story Hour, "Dress Up," presented by education students through the Grigg-Lewis Foundation grant and open to pre-school and school-age children, takes place Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 10:30 am.

•"Bongo Joe's World of Music," a family program about different instruments from around the world, will be offered Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 6 p.m. Register in the Children's Room.

•Tic Tac Go-Global Games, a family program on how to play games from around the world, will be offered Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 6 p.m. Register in the Children's Room.

•Story time with Mrs. Leardini, for children of all ages, will be offered Thursdays, Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 10:30 a.m. Featured will be stories, music, crafts and fun.

•Story Hour for Lap Readers, featuring "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," will be offered Monday, Aug. 1, at 10:30 a.m. Other programs for younger children are "Sleepy Time," which includes music, finger play, stories and crafts, on Monday, Aug. 8, at 10:30 a.m., and "Game Day," which includes story hour and games, on Monday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m.

Clubs and More

•The Lewiston Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.

•Mom's Book Chat, a book discussion group for moms, will meet Thursday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. Discussed will be "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," by Seth Grahame-Smith. Child care is provided for registered participants. The library will be closed to the public during this event.

•The Lewiston Writers' Group meets on Mondays, Aug. 8 and 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. Both sessions will take place at the library.

The group consists of area residents who meet regularly to discuss and critique their writing efforts, and exchange ideas and information about the craft. Guest speakers are scheduled as available. For more information, visit www.lewistonwritersgroup.com.

•The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. No registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144.

•The Dead Beats Society will meet on Monday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m. in the Local History Room. Call Michelle at the library, 754-4720 for details, or email at [email protected].  

•The Coffin Club is looking for photographers for the new club. Those in high school or college with a camera, access to a computer and time to spend photographing Niagara area cemeteries, should call Michelle at the library, 754-4720 for details, or email [email protected]

•The Friends of the Library will meet Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 6 p.m. Library hours: Monday-Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday, noon to 5 p.m.
