Teachers, retired teachers and friends in the Grand Island Central School District set aside their vacation to begin efforts at creating a first-ever Island breast cancer benefit concert.

GI Sings for Hope is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, at Grand Island High School. Proceeds from the event will benefit breast cancer services at Mary's Room and Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center. The concert is the brainchild of Huth Road Elementary music teacher Carol Horrigan.

Volunteers met at Huth Road School Wednesday to begin making gifts to sell at a Think Pink Boutique in the Viking Mall the night of the concert.

"All I had to say was, 'Is there anybody who wants to help?' Then I had thousands of volunteers," said Horrigan. "So this is what we spent doing on our summer vacation."

Scheduled to perform in concert are the Huth Road Elementary Select Chorus, the Grand Island High School Concert Choir, and the Grand Island Community Chorus, Horrigan said. Admission is free.

"It's going to be an inspirational concert," Horrigan said.

Concert organizers are also looking for sponsors and singers for a "pink chorus." Contact Horrigan at [email protected], or call 773-5451.

Volunteers made about 150 ornaments, and plan to make baked goods, bracelets and inspiration note cards, among other gifts available for purchase in the Viking Mall before and after the concert. Wednesday at Huth Road School, more than 30 people gathered to help make gifts for the boutique. Among others taking part in activity were Horrigan, Deborah Beis, Diane Lipp, Kathy Brown, Penny Schmitt, Mary Kopf, Amy McMann, Pauline Covatto, Diana Nobumoto, Maryann D'Avolio, Karen Cassata, Roseanne O'Brien, Karen Schauger, Deanna Cannavo, Celeste Angelo, Lauren Fonte, Peggy Koppmann, Vinnie Passanese, Kerri Nowak, Carolyn Lokken, Jennifer Kropidlowski, Angela Gorecki, Craig Poissant and Mary Jane Fonte. Kaleigh Kropidlowski and Kate Fonte.
