Grandmaster Jim Wood and Nina Wood, owners of YI-DAN CHA GI Martial Arts in Wheatfield, have been certified through the International Association of Krav Maga and their studio is an official krav maga training center.

Krav maga is Hebrew for "contact combat." It is the official self-defense system of the Israeli defense forces and is used by members of several U.S. law enforcement agencies.

Regardless of size, strength, or fitness, krav maga (shown below) emphasizes simple, practical techniques and real life scenarios, according to the Woods. Students of krav maga use basic moves in various combinations to fend off violent attacks. Because physical fitness is closely interwoven into the system, the workout includes a number of cardiovascular and strength-building exercises, as well as stretching to increase flexibility.

No experience in the martial arts is necessary for these classes. The benefits include awareness, confidence and physical fitness.

"We have students that are 17 and students in their 70s," Nina Wood mentions.

YI-DAN CHA GI Martial Arts has been in existence since 1994, also instructing karate, children's self-defense/awareness classes and women self-defense. The training center is located at 3305 Niagara Falls Blvd.

YI-DAN CHA GI Martial Arts Center is the only studio in the state, certified through The International Association of krav maga. The Woods are also inductees of The United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
