As summer approaches parents are thinking of ways to keep their children occupied over the school break.

One option is a program offered by the Orleans/Niagara BOCES' Niagara Career and Technical Education Center. It is a summer camp that has two one-week-long sessions that exposes students entering the fifth to seventh grade to different career opportunities.

Coordinator Anedda Trautman says it is never too early to show students what career and technical education has to offer.

"Some children know what they want to be when they grow up, others really are not sure and this is a great way to expose them to several different career paths that might catch their interest or solidify it and possibly help them to determine what they might want to study in high school or college. We are offering 10 exciting classes each week and students get to chose four they would like to attend. We have received a steady stream of applicants from Niagara and Erie counties, and we can't wait for their arrival on July 18."

Last year's program ran one week and was so popular that Trautman decided to add another week with another set of programs.

"This year we have extended our program into two, one-week sessions. This will give parents the opportunity to check us out for a week or chose both weeks," she said.

The courses offered the first week (July 18-22) are: "CSI-Crime Scene Investigation," "Foods of the World," "Traveling America," "We Got the Bling ... Bling," "NASCAR Pit-Stop," "Put the 'Ahh' Back in Spa," "Real Life ER," "Behind the Scenes," "Create Your Own Dream Scape," "Ready for Lift Off." The second week's (July 25-29) offerings are: "Law and Order," "Team Challenge," "It's Electrifying," "Taste of the States," "Nanny 911," "What Not to Wear," "Can You Float Your BOAT?," "The Daytona 500," "Pampered in Paradise," "Boot Camp," and "Houston, We Have a Problem."

The program will be offered at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center at 3181 Saunders Settlement Road in Sanborn and will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students must provide their own lunch and refrigeration is available. Tuition is $160.
