County water line work on Lockport Road in Wheatfield is about to begin. Some preliminary work has already been done, but by July 5, large equipment should be on site to start putting in the large pipe, according to project director Rob Klavoon.

Work will start just west of Ward Road, continue on to Mapleton Road, then turn north on Shawnee Road back to Lockport Road, then continue along Lockport Road all the way past Campbell Boulevard.

Klavoon spoke to residents on how the project would affect residents and businesses along the way and answered questions at a meeting Monday at Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co. A similar meeting for residents of Pendleton and Cambria was held Wednesday.

While work is proceeding, Lockport Road will be down to single lane traffic directed by one-way traffic lights. Two-way traffic will be restored when crews are not working. Homes and utility lines will be affected as work passes driveways. It is anticipated that all driveways and utilities will be working each evening.

Some residents asked if the contractor would be willing to lay in pipe in personal ditches. The representative from Catco said he is willing to work with anyone with little or no charge for laying drainage pipe instead of replacing ditches, with the pipe purchased by the homeowners. However, Niagara County or state permits will be required. Anyone interested, should contact Klavoon at 688-0766, ext. 1119, as soon as possible.

Catco expects to complete the installation of all pipe by this fall with restoration of personal property and the road surfacing completed next spring.
